Found these words of wisdom in David Bach’s financial guide, Start Late, Finish Rich. He’s talking about handling your finances, but it could apply to most things in life.
THE PAST IS OVER
Oh, you say, if only I knew then what I know now, my whole life would be different. Of course it would. But guess what–you didn’t know. Or if you did, you didn’t do what you knew you needed to be doing.
So it’s done. Finished. Settled.
Sometimes life is unfair.
But that’s okay.
You can move on.
You can get over it.
Stop asking yourself why you didn’t do what you should have done. The real question is: What are you going to do about it now?

YOU REALLY NEED TO GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
You’ve been way too hard on yourself over the years. If a friend or relative ever said the things to you that you’ve been saying to yourself, you’d stop talking to them. You’d end the relationship then and there. You’d cut them out of your life.
You can become the person you really want to be. You start by letting go of all the old stories you keep replaying in your head like a broken record or scratched CD.
The past will continue to be your future if you drag it along with you!

Very true - good advice!

I once had it put like this to me: There was a man who carried his past with him, in a sack on his back. As he got older, it got heavier and people would tell him to put it down, to let go of it. But he couldn’t. Wouldn’t? One day he was walking over the bridge and it started to sway and to bend with the weight of it. People on the banks yelled to him to let go of his ’sack’. To throw it away and lighten his load so that the bridge would hold. He couldn’t. Wouldn’t? The bridge broke under the weight and he fell in the water and died. That story has always stuck with me.

That’s what forgivness is all about. When we know God forgives then we can forgive ourselves and drop the past.

Some people have an easier time forgiving others that they do forgiving themselves. On the other hand, it might just make them feel important to think that their bad deeds had an influence on others and on the world.
